The marionettes are really dead little kids. 
I have seen this Lifetime movie of the week and trust me, this does not end well for the little boy!
For as long as I can remember my mother has been deathly afraid of frogs. She seriously has always had a freak out whenever she has come across one. Knowing this, as kids we used to bring them to her as a surprise. A surprise that mostly usually ended up with hearing the words, "You fucking kids!" being screamed.
