1983

Turns out today is the 30th anniversary of the release of Valley Girl (thank you internet, how did humans manage without you before?).  I will admit that I did not see this movie in the theater.  I did see all the John Hughes films in the 80's but not this one.  Perhaps I got side tracked and wound up in the theater to see Streets of Fire instead - I so remember seeing that movie in the theater and I even walked to get there.   I did see Valley Girl in the 80's though and think I will bust out my VHS tape and watch in memorial this week.  Interestingly enough I did find out that they made Nicholas Cage shave his hairy chest so that he would not look so old it in.  MAN I have been wondering all these years why he had such a perfectly shaped triangle patch of hair all.  Was hot so it kinda disappoints me, plus I find it odd that it never dawned on me (especially in this age of manscaping) - but one less question on my list - yay!

Still Midnight

I thought all day today about Midnight Cowboy - such a good story and so well done.  It explores loneliness and connection with others and how it is not only through traditional means that it can be done.  Plus the Joe Buck character is so sweet and sincere.  He had been through a lot and yet he kept his honesty and kindness.  I read that the movie is very true to the book so now I am curious to read the book.  I ordered it and can't wait for it to come.  People can be in totally different places in their lives and look down at times upon those not in the same place but this just shows none of that BS matters.  We all want the same thing - regardless of what we have or don't have, what we say or don't say or what we do or don't do.  Everyone's story starts the same and end the same.  Those that remember that usually write the most interesting chapters that come in between.

Midnight Review

I got my computer back but since then my netflix was not working.  I finally called on Friday about it and they fixed it lickey split.  I dunno why it took me so long to call but it worked well as I am having a low key weekend.  I was sorting though my list of movies to see and Midnight Cowboy popped up.  I had no idea what it was about but knew it won and Oscar - plus have been in a 70's kinda mood so I clicked play.  What a great movie - sad yes. but so touching.  Like an updated version Of Mice and Men.  Jon Voight's character (Joe Buck), although misguided is so sweet and sincere.  I could so identify as he was drawn to the broken ones, especially since he was also broken.  He and Ratso lived in squalor but they had friendship.  Sure money helps a lot in this world but humans need to connect with other humans - any other fucked up bullshit doesn't matter if you have at least one person that is glad you are here.

A Place for Ruby's Pearls

I was out rounding up stuff today to resell on ebay today and I came across a super awesome celluloid pink jewelry box.  It had no jewelry in it but it was in awesome condition and at a two bucks I was loving it.  I had never heard of Deltah (love the Bostonian spelling) so I did some research on it and found this vintage ad from the 1940's for the exact box that I bought.  The ad itself is so great and I love even more that the box held pearls.  Guess these were all the rage in the 40's too and had plenty of Hollywood Star endorsements.  I only got the box - sadly no pearls but I am fine, you know I love boxes.  I really did buy it to resell it but now think it gonna stay in Esco with me for a while.  This weekend I will take pictures of it to post so you can see how beautiful it is.  I am so not materialistic - I drive a freaking Saturn but classy and vintage and just to die for - this box made my day (not a sentence I have ever sad before, pun intended).  I bet if I did have the pearls though that I would look damn good in them.

What Are You Picking Up Now?

I get a lot of grief for picking up stuff off the street or sidewalk -- I can't help it, I am too curious.  I never find anything of great value but I always find something of great interest.  We recently I spied a pair of sunglasses so I went over to them and picked them up and they turned out to be a pair of Smith sunglasses in excellent condition.  I feel awful for whoever lost them but that is why I only get my sunglasses at the dollar store.  Although I did manage to keep my vintage 80's clubmaster sunglasses all these years and still love them.  Well I checked out the glasses when I got home and they retail for $125 but I could find them on eBay for $80.  I posted them today for $20, since they are used, and they got a bid in 10 minutes.  YAY for picking up trash!  Now I just have to wait all week to see what they go for.  Even if they only go for $20 then I am pleased.  So remember there are treasures out there if you keep your eyes open for them.  Also again I am sorry for whoever lost them.

Sad Day

Bombs in Boston - how awful.  Most days the world is really difficult to understand but today it is even more difficult to understand than normal.  I am glad all my friends and family are safe.  My heart goes out to those that cannot say the same.
